Day Two - Sprinkles, mud, vineyards, and tired feet

Cacabelos to Trabadelo: Fairly easy day but we do have tired feet. Today's hike was ten miles per the guide book and to be honest it felt a bit longer.

We love the folks along the way. They honk, stop to give directions or yell Buen Camino. We didn't see one other pilgrim today. After a very meager breakfast offered at our hotel we headed off through the vineyards of El Briergo. It was a pleasant walk but it did get really muddy. I decided to break out the trekking poles and they do help but decided that I should have practiced using them a bit. Oh well. The landscape was really pretty and this white washed house between to pine trees was particularly scenic.

Lunch was probably the treat of the day. We were treated to a peregrino (pilgrim) lunch. We had read about them and it was very good and not very expensive. We arrived into Villafranca at about noon and couldn't find anything open. Finally, we found a bar and cafeteria and went in to be told in very broken Spanglish that they don't serve food but gave me hand jesters to a restaurant. We arrived at about twenty to one and the owner told us that they don't open until one. To fill the time, we had a beer and some green olives in the bar area. At one she lead us to the dining room. She had called someone to come and wait on us that spoke some English. The waitress told us the menu. Three courses. Mark started with a huge bowl of very yummy navy bean soup with spicy meat and I had spaghetti. Then next was chicken and french fries for Mark and I had trout and potatoes. All served with a bottle of red wine and dessert was flan. Grand total was 12 euro per person about 15 dollars. I don't think she charged for the beer and olives. But it is hard to tell because they just write down a total. The guy taking our money for lunch told Mark not to take the hilly alternate route. It was more senic but longer and not really the original way. Good call. It was a fairly flat walk through a valley with a river running along one side. The down side was it was mostly near a road but it was pretty quite. The asphalt was a little hard on the feet though. It did sprinkle most of the afternoon but it never really rained hard. Which was a good thing.

We received an email from the hotel that we booked telling us they were closed and that they had made us a reservation at another place in town. It is a very small village so we were wondering what the place would be like. They have a population of 430 so there was no telling. But the accommodations are not bad and we have our own bathroom so this will work for the night.
