Ponferrada to Cacabelos: We were only supposed to walk a little over 9 miles today. But we took a detour to see the 12th century Templar Castle (built in 1178) by King Fernando II and Mark took a us on a tiny wrong turn. So we ended up walking 12 miles.
The Way of St James is well marked with a sea shell motif but when we didn't see a directional sign leading us through a school, we saw a hand waving out a window of a home and a lady telling us in Spanish to go back. We must not have been the first hikers to miss the sign because she was on the look out. We laughed and thanked her.
Needing lunch and a bathroom break we stopped at a bar and cafe. Thinking it meant bar and food but it really meant bar and coffee. No English was spoken but I asked about lunch and the server went and brought us a small bowl of stew and bread. She didn't charge us for the food. Just two beers which was only 4 euro.
The first part of the day was mostly paved road and going through small towns. While walking past a small chapel in Columbrianos with a pilgrims mural we noticed a big nest with a white stork. Not sure you can tell in the picture but we have noticed several nests along the way.
Jan Pelosi, I stopped in a cemetery just for you. They are colorful and ornate.
We did have a little rain shower that informed us that our rain shells are not as water proof as we hoped. But the sun came out and we were treated to a cool rainbow.
Fun fact Bread gets delivered to doors in Spain. I wish that I would have stopped to take a picture of the two loafs just sitting in a window ledge.
We stopped for a break at a local winery in Camponaraya. Very nice wines between 2.50 euro and 12 euro. The "way" takes you through vineyards for a couple of miles.
We met our first fellow Peregrino on the trip as we were checking into our hotel. He is a Spainard. We are staying the night in a lovely hotel called the La Moncloa de San Lazro.
