Holland, Michigan area

Founded by Dutch Calvinist immigrants in 1847, the city of Holland, Michigan, is an outpost of Dutch culture and tradition with dikes, canals and an authentic Dutch windmill.

Big Red- built in 1847 - probably the coolest lighthouse we visited.

Grand Haven Breaker Lighthouse- built in 1839

Exploring the USS Silversides submarine was super cool. My first comment - they must have wanted small men on the vessel. Built in 1941 for WWII - a successful sub that sank 30 Japanese ships. You can still smell the diesel and much of the sub is still operational. Crew could shower once every 14 days and officers every 5 days. I bet that place smelled wonderful!

Torpedo tubes

Bathroom - looks comfortable, huh?

Bunkhouse - not much better than the bathroom!

Office

The men aboard the Coast Guard cutter McClane seemed to have an easier life - except when it came to their quarters.

Bunkhouse

Officer quarters - rank has its privileges!

Lunch was at a small craft brewery called Pigeon Hill and we visited a super yummy distillery called Coopercraft to end the busy day.
