The Traverse City wine region is perfect for growing Riesling grapes. Very cold winters and comparatively cool summers help whites keep their acidity while the long days allow the grapes to build sugar.
This is a very pretty area with beautiful wineries… but we were pretty shocked with the high tasting fees (equaling Napa level) for some fairly unsophisticated and disappointing wines. We did buy a few bottles of dry Rieslings but was really hoping to stock up the wine refrigerator for the winter. Absolutely zero big bold reds to be found in this wine region today - but we are going to try a couple more tomorrow… stay tuned.
We visited Mari - owned by one of the Curse of Oak Island brothers. Beautiful winery overlooking the lake.
Bowers Harbor - highest tasting fee of the day but super cute wine flight. We decided the fee was so high because no one was buying the wine!
Our last winery of the day was Peninsula Cellars - an old school house turned winery. Note the blue hour glass on each table. Well this one was a 45 minute timer - your limit to occupy the table!
We finished the day at the tip of the peninsula visiting the mission point lighthouse.
