Mackinac Island - Day 1

Mackinac Island is a tiny 4.35 mile body of land that sits in Lake Huron. We took the ferry over from Saint Ignace.

When a smattering of motor vehicles first started appearing on Mackinac Island, a groups of carriage owners petitioned the village council to prohibit dangerous cars that were frightening their horses. Village leaders enacted the ban on July 6, 1898 and it has stayed in place to this day! Walking, bikes and horses are the only modes of getting around the island.

These horses are huge and definitely workers. We were told that get sick and die early if they don’t do what they are bred for and pull carriages. They will live up to 35 years. They retire the horses when they lose the desire to work. FedEx and UPS and every product is deliver by horse and buggy.

We took a carriage tour, roamed around the simply stunning area, and enjoyed the beautiful landscapes.

Visited the “arch”, ate fudge and ice cream. The things to do on Mackinac!

We had a lovely lunch on the water at a stunning restaurant.

We finished the day listening to a lovely voice playing live music.

We are staying at the historic Murray Hotel - built in the 1800’s.

Tomorrow, we will visit the very “Grand Hotel” - stay tuned!
