West Glacier National Park

We met up with wonderful friends - The Long’s and Kephart’s to explore the west portion of glacier that is open. What a difference on the West side of park vs the East.

I gotta say the East side is much more majestic and much less crowded!  After experiencing the East side we decided that we were spoiled with the lack of visitors. I guess people don’t want to invest the time to drive around - since the going to the sun road isn’t fully open. It is totally worth it. The steady stream of bodies was almost comical.

We hiked John’s Lake Loop to view….

McDonald falls

Sacred Dancing Cascades

Then moved up to the Trail of the Cedars - what a beautiful forest.

Then someone had the bright idea (smile) to hike to Avalanche Lake. The sign said 3.6 miles round trip - we saw a park ranger and she said it was more like 5. Marks fitness tracker said we walked 8.2 miles total for the day. My weary bones agree. But what an incredible view! Avalanche Lake was amazing with snow melt waterfalls filling the lake. We didn’t bring water with us - so we drank straight out of the crystal clear lake.

After a picnic lunch and the we visited the Lake McDonald lodge for huckleberry cocktails - good but had no idea that huckleberries were so tart!  Great day with lovely friends.
